What Is Asphalt Paving?

Asphalt paving material is similar to what you see road crews laying on roads. It is a combination of stone, sand, and asphalt, a tar-like material made from petroleum. The asphalt is heated to over 300 F and liquefied. Asphalt contractors have to work with the mix fast before it solidifies.

The life expectancy of asphalt varies based on climate, traffic, and maintenance. It is possible to last 25-30 years, but this depends on factors like how strong the base is and the soil type underneath.

Signs You Need New Asphalt

  • Standing Water. If water pools on your driveway, it’s a sign of a drainage problem which could lead to structural damage.
  • Raveling- loose pieces of gravel or pitting. If ignored, this can quickly spiral out of control.
  • Cracks or missing pieces. This is a sign that the sub-base under your pavement is no longer supportive.

What is a Paving Contractor Good For?

Asphalt Driveway Repair or Replacement

We do driveway repairs for cracks, potholes, stains, and crumbled pavement to name a few. When patching cracks or potholes, we take care to first clean the area before pouring the new asphalt and compressing it. For driveways with major damage such as alligator cracks and crumbling, we do full driveway replacement. Our contractors will determine the necessary thickness of the layer that needs to be removed depending on the level of damage.

Resurfacing

Sometimes just the top layer needs to be replaced. If there is no foundational damage, a full replacement is not necessary. Instead, we will resurface the driveway by removing the top layer and replacing it with new asphalt. This will take care of all cracks and potholes on the surface.

Sealcoating

We offer brush-on sealcoating to protect your driveway from the elements and traffic. This protective layer prevents water and oil from getting underneath the pavement which can cause severe damage over time. It’s important to reseal your driveway every few years to extend its life and provide a safe, smooth driving and walking surface for you and your family.

Asphalt Millings

Some driveways are composed of small pieces of recycled asphalt that are pressed together. If you’re looking to repave your driveway, consider using asphalt millings. They are environmentally safe and can withstand harsh weather and weed growth. We have the materials and equipment needed to get this job done.

Commercial Parking Lots

We do both residential and commercial asphalt paving. Commercial pavement must be durable enough to withstand constant daily traffic as well as smooth and clean-cut to ensure a professional business environment. Whether you need a simple repair on your existing lot or a full replacement, we will handle it. We understand there are many options when it comes to hiring a professional paving contractor. That’s why we at Hudson Valley strive for 100% customer satisfaction with every project we do.

Line Striping

In addition to commercial lot repair and replacement, we also offer line striping to our local business customers. We provide striping services for parking lots, roads, fire lanes, and athletic courts to name a few. Our team is detail-oriented and ensures straight-line striping using vibrant and colorful paint. Not only will your lot look professional but it will also contribute to the safety of pedestrians and drivers. Faded lines in roads or parking lots are accident hazards and must be repainted immediately.

Sealcoating Driveways

Sealcoating your driveway adds a protective layer on top that prevents cracks from daily wear and tear and the changing weather. If there are cracks in the asphalt, water, oil, and debris will seep underneath, causing erosion and potholes over time. When hiring a paving contractor, you need to consider which application technique you prefer. At Hudson Valley Brothers Asphalt Paving, we are proud to offer brush-on sealing for maximum coverage and protection.

Spray-On Technique

Spray-on application allows for a quick and easy sealant job for your driveway. However, this technique does not provide as protective a coating as does the brush-on application. When sealant is sprayed on, not all the cracks and divots in the asphalt are not sealed or filled in because the mix is spread thinner. Driveways that are treated with this method usually last about one year to a year and a half. Our team at Hudson Valley Brothers Asphalt Paving ensures that each driveway is fully protected with a thick enough layer to last three to four years.

Brush-On Technique

With brush-on application, it takes significantly longer to get the job done, but it provides more long-term protection for your driveway. Our technicians take the time to carefully pour the sealant onto the asphalt and then thoroughly brush it on using a squeegee to create a smooth, finished look. The material is forced into the cracks and divots so no water, oil, or other debris can seep in.
